Breaking the cycle of poverty

Helping graduates land jobs

Post-secondary students are sponsored through the entirety of their program, completing their degree without loans.

During and after post-secondary studies, students are assigned to an internship for 6-12 months to gain work experience and make connections with employers in the community.

Creating a cycle of prosperity

After getting established work, most students support family members through their own education, further broadening the ripple effect throughout the community. They also become engaged community members, serving as youth mentors, tutors, board members, social workers, and church leaders.

Kanga

Choosing education over expectation

Kanga’s story

Kanga grew up on a sisal plantation in rural Kenya, where poverty, illiteracy, and tradition pressed in all around her. From a young age, many expected her future to be marriage—not high school. But Kanga believed education was her path out of poverty.

For years, generous teachers covered her school fees when her family simply could not afford them. She served faithfully as school prefect, took responsibility as librarian, cared for younger siblings, and managed the home chores—all while studying hard. Thanks to Kenya Keys’ Hope Springs program, she gained essential life skills: self-reliance, time management, and stronger resolve. When the time came to take the national exam that decides secondary school placement, Kanga’s hard work paid off: she earned a Kenya Keys sponsorship to a boarding high school—turning what had once seemed like hope into reality.

From student to school builder

Kennedy’s story

Kennedy’s journey with Kenya Keys began when he came from extreme poverty and was accepted into our sponsorship program after finishing eighth grade. This sponsorship shifted his life’s trajectory. When he pursued his degree, he didn’t stop at personal success. Kennedy noticed children in his community walking 5-6 miles each way to school, risking dangers from wildlife and harsh terrain. Motivated by compassion and grit, he led fellow alumni and locals in raising materials, labor, and small contributions to build a two-classroom school. He then navigated the process to have the school, Kirimani Primary, recognized by the government, so that more teachers and classrooms could follow.

Kennedy’s story is more than individual success, it is multiplied impact. Because of his education, his sponsor’s investment, his own resilience, and the support of his community, he’s now opening doors of learning and hope for the next generation.

Responsible Management

Since 2023 alone, 60 volunteers have contributed over 5,000 hours of service. Thanks to these dedicated volunteer efforts, administrative costs are under 10%, allowing donor contributions to remain focused on student sponsorship and maintain the personal connection between sponsor and student—a core value of Kenya Keys.
